I am a fan of 8-Days. Every week, I will religiously get my copy of 8-Days and the 1st 2 pages that I will flip to are the LAST 2 pages of the magazine – Last Page by Colin Goh and First Person by Jason Hahn

The articles on the above 2 pages can really garner a laugh from me. This week, the last page from Colin Goh is really cool! I laughed it right out on the MRT – Pick-Up Lines for Use on MRT and Buses…

I have a good friend who at times, will sms me in the morning when he’s stuck in that ever-so-crowded MRT. I bet there’s something for the single him to do now, like what Colin says: “…start buaya-ing on buses and MRTs and make your more expensive ride more productive?”

I went for a tooth extraction today. It must have been almost 20 years since my last extraction. I can never forget how my grandmum did it with a string and a door. Alright, let’s not go there. Well, the nurse asked during my extraction today if I wanted to take my tooth back and I said yes. Of course, must have it back as a keepsake! But something interesting happened when the dentist, after extracting my tooth , asked: “WOULD YOU LIKE TO DONATE YOUR TOOTH?”

I was shocked! Donate?! What good does a tooth do? It’s not like a bag of rice or blood or…? Then the dentist proceed to explain further. She said that her friend is on some research work that involves the teeth and allow the blind to see again with the aid of the teeth. Well, right after extraction and 6 spots of Local Anaesthetic, that’s as much as I can register. But of course, I did not reject her.

Very intrigued, I came back and start googling for information and there it is – “TOOTH-IN-EYE (OOKP) Surgery”.

Click on image for a bigger view
Extracted from The Sunday Times, 24 August 2004

OOKP is a complex 2-stage operation which aims to restore vision to the most severe cases of corneal and ocular surface patients for whom all previous attempts to restore vision had failed. The procedure involves removing a canine tooth from the patient, shaping and drilling it to allow implantation of an artificial plastic corneal device (optical cylinder), and ultimately implanting it back into one eye a few months later.

The 1st successful case was reported in July 2004. Interesting, very interesting. Here are some links where you can read more of “TOOTH-IN-EYE”.

It’s always exciting when my birthday nears although there’s this dark side of me that is always imagining what if…what is no one remembers?! mmm…anyway, I am getting my 1st birthday pressie! And it’s from my best friend…and it’s also something that I have been procrastinating for a long time! So what exactly is that…

My best friend has decided to get me a makeover package!!! Oh yes! Well, I will say it’s more of a glamour shot. I love photography…being the one behind the camera but I don’t like to be photographed – the one in front of the camera. The time when I could almost look nice in photos are:

Either I am making a face

Or I am acting all sweet and cute

Otherwise, nah….hahaha…but I must say, the idea of glamour shots has been on my head for a while. Well, let’s just say a long while. I surprise 2 friends before by blindfolding them into the glamour shot studios and its all fun. Oh well, WE ARE ONLY YOUNG ONCE!

I am 28 this year and I am so going to preserve that on film!

While serving online for some glamour shot studios, I came across some which I thought were pretty good for consideration (I opt for either natural or fashion the way to go!), perhaps, its time for you to take a flash too?

Instant Glamour

De Character

Cover Looks

While, perhaps, anticipating for my glamour shots, I shall treat you to my usual shots!

I mean there are many great ads but something with a humour, something that lays it flat, something that intrigues. Alright, I admit, I have a weird sense of humour which I am still trying to figure out myself…more on that later.

The last time I saw something similar was for Old Chang Kee’s “Expecting Twins” campaign in a bid to promote their 2 new flavour curry puffs – sardines and pepper chicken. Recently on tv, something that really attracted me was this ad from Soy Joy’s “So Joyful Together” ad….

The illustrated ad features a soy bean and a strawberry, in the labour ward and the Mr Soy was all panicking while Mrs Strawberry-Soy was in labour. After much hardwork, the doctor came out and said: “Congratulations! It’s a Bar!” This is funny! It caught me out of expectation and immediately turned my head to notice the commercial. Bring together soy bean and strawberry and it will “give birth” to a soy bar with strawberry. Excellent! Below is the commerical if you have missed it on TV.

It’s been a long time since I blogged. Been busy with work and my personal projects (see blogroll on the right). Oh well, I am not going to have my fans disappointed. To kickstart 2008…

I was at my brother’s place on Saturday and having not seen my 18 months old niece for a month, she sure has grown taller and is now sporting a new doll bob hairstyle for the Chinese New Year. Alegria was exceptionally affectionate that day, she even kissed me real hard…

Her mum and I were sitting on the same sofa and we were trying to teach her some simple English so this is how the conversation goes….

Sis-in-law: “Alegria, where is baby?” (my sis-in-law is having my 2nd niece in a month time)

Alegria: Happily pat on the big stomach and said in unclear pronounciation “Ba…bi…”

Shortly after, Alegria happily came over to me and hugged me and kissed me real hard and…happily patted my big fat paunch and said in unclear pronounciation “Ba…bi…”

That was the best laugh for everyone that Sunday! I will never forget the kiss as I would with my “paunch-incident”.

These days marketing has definitely taken on a fresh approach. Aren’t you bore by the usual flyers distributors standing in your pathway, insisting or better still, can’t even be bothered to give out the flyer that he/she is holding in her hands?! This very day, while finally able to have the time after work, I popped by Centrepoint to buy my very belated supply of dog food, I was captivated by something, although run on the mill, but strangely refreshing.

Tianpo Jewellery, one of my favourites for their diamonds patterns and coloured gems series, was having a roadshow at Centrepoint’s atrium. Ok, it was a small booth with the usual black suited staff. But wait a minute, something was different here…there are some small bar tables around…and oh, guess what?! It must be some kind of private event for the members, which may also, by the way, allow public to browse the collection, that which I am not sure. Anyway, the point is…

Tianpo was having this fashion show, showcasing their newer jewelleries, with goodie bags, champagne in proper champagne glasses and importantly, good music. Kudos to the marketing, be it a member’s event or a public one, it sure captivates the passer-by eyes, me included. I paused for a while to take a peek at the fashion show. Nice! Checkout the short video below if you are interested.

These days when we say “Pause”, it will be most probably be under the following circumstances:

Pause your mp3/ipod/whatever music gadget you have your ears on

Pause your online games

Pause the vcd/dvd/pre-recorded show/pirated-downloaded movie

or you wish you can pause the tv show’s most exciting part while you take a leak

A voice was panting right beside me: “Pause! Pause! Pause!…” A boy, probably around 10 was playing catching with a couple of other kids. I thought the last time catching was ever played was like years ago! These days, we hardly see kids hanging around the HDB void decks and taking the whole vicinity as playground! I did. I remembered those good old days when we ran round trying to catch each other.

Pause was extremely familiar for me! Hahhaa…being a fatter gal, I always had to pause myself so I can catchup or hide not to be caught for that matter! It was really a refreshing sight for me to see these kids playing catching! Somehow, it brought me down memory lane…but all was not as pleasant as it was when….the “pausing” kid went into the lift, after somewhat catching his breath, and left me outside the lift looking like an idiot trying to get in…so much for pausing…but then again, that’s the whole purpose – Pause to catch your breathe!

Working late is usual for me…and what accompanies me through the usual late nights is none other than the very faithful radio. Gold90 is usually my choice but once in a while, I don’t mind Singapore’s only class…Class95. And this one night, I made a dedication for the CCKSS Alumni on Yaz’s Love Songs…and I heard her say…

…People say 1st kiss always leave a tingle…

That’s it! That’s all it takes for the memories to come rushing back. I finally distinguished why am I not a fan of kissing ever since….

It was during my 1st kiss with my ex-boyfriend. After hanging out at his place for some videos and snacks, we were parting goodbye when he “decided” that he would like to have our first kiss at the void deck. So here we go…and EEEWWWWW!!!! Much as I would like to stop it, I carried on with the kiss “unpassionately”, but enough to not let him know I wanna stop. At that point of time, the only thing that was going through my mind was:

Argh!!! Why did he kiss me?! All I can taste is the Pizza-flavoured Pringles! It’s eeewwww!!!!

So much for tingles at 1st kisses…I am very sure my tingles did not come and instead, I got LOADS of PRINGLES! Little wonder why I did not really fancy the pizza-flavoured pringles ever since….

I started to appreciate Chinatown more, regardless of the fact that I am so in love with the food there! hahaha…Just that morning when I went to work, I saw something which most of you won’t get to see. The early morning version of Chinatown when the sun shines on the streets and all is quiet…that’s what starts my day off. Ain’t that beautiful?

3 shophouses away from my office, there’s a rooftop bar on the 4th storey. I went there once with my friends to while my birthday night away. The alcoholic drinks there are at about $5 per glass. Its a neat cosy little place that can accomodate at most 20pax. From there, you get breathtaking view of the streets of Chinatown with the night lights illuminating brightly. But you will have to survive 4 storeys worth of long staircases! Hahaha…the boss is kind enough to give you a pat on the shoulder for making it up to the bar by pasting: “Congratulations, you have made it” sign at the entrance!

I have always hated working in town. I really dread it especially so during peak hours. The human crowd is argghh!!!! And you know what, I am actually working in Chinatown. The 1.15 hour bus and train ride is not something I enjoy always, much less the more expensive travel cost as opposed to if I am working 1 bus ride away from my house like my mum.

Chinatown is a very diverse place although primarily, the type of food you will find there caters to Chinese and there’s a lot of other Chinese shops such as the bak-kwa stalls, medical halls, accupunture, etc. But you get to see many kinds of people – Eurasians, Americans, Australian, Japanese, Koreans, HongKongers, Indians and many more. It’s kinda amazing…and it’s so hard to believe that a place, with part of it refurbished while most part of it still retaining its beautiful Chinese culture, could be such a beautiful tourist attraction.
